What Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is HMRC's move toward digital record keeping and software-based quarterly updates for eligible taxpayers. Instead of rebuilding records once a year, affected users need accurate digital records through the tax year and must submit quarterly updates by HMRC deadlines.

For self-employed GP locums, that usually means keeping session income, invoice payments, expenses, mileage, pension context and any supported property business records organised before each quarterly review.

Why it matters for self-employed GP locums

Locum work often involves multiple practices, changing session rates, different invoice dates and separate expense records. MTD makes record quality a quarterly workflow, not only a year-end task.

  • Keep session income current.
  • Record expenses and mileage promptly.
  • Review quarterly figures before submission.
  • Meet HMRC deadlines for your circumstances.

How airGP helps with digital records

airGP is an administrative, bookkeeping, invoicing, expense, mileage, pension and tax-reporting tool for GP locums. It helps you keep the operational records that feed quarterly review: sessions, invoices, payments, expenses, mileage, pension records and property records where relevant.

The core airGP subscription remains separate from the MTD add-on. You can still use airGP for locum admin, invoicing and records while the MTD submission add-on is awaiting approval.

Pricing and availability

MTD Compliance Add-on - £4.99/month, billed monthly, with a 12-month minimum term.

MTD submissions through airGP require an active MTD Compliance Add-on. The add-on is optional and separate from the main airGP subscription, so GP locums who only need core admin, invoicing, expenses, pension records and standard tax exports can continue using those features without activating MTD.

Once activated, the MTD add-on has a 12-month minimum commitment. You continue to pay £4.99/month during this period and keep access to HMRC connection, quarterly submissions, submission history and MTD support features. If you cancel during the minimum term, your add-on remains active and billing continues until the end of the 12-month commitment.

After the commitment period ends, MTD access stops unless you continue the subscription. The add-on is billed monthly throughout the active term; it is not a pay-only-in-filing-months service.
